Vacancy Arabic, Farsi and Russian translator volunteer
LGBTI-refugees originate from various countries. Clients often have a Russian, Arabic or Iranian background, on account of homophobic-legislation and prevalent societal attitude. As such, LGBT Asylum Support is looking for volunteer translators in Arabic, Farsi and Russian to translate documents which are vital for asylum requests of individual clients. Are you proficient in one of the aforementioned languages and wish to assist individual clients with their asylum request? Can you bridge linguistic gaps and speak to cultural differences in relation to LGBTI-refugees? Then you are the translator volunteer we are looking for!
Responsibilities
As part of LGBT Asylum Support, you will work in collaboration with the team of volunteers in preparing the case file of individual clients. In order for clients to substantiate their asylum request, documents are required that provide insight into their sexual orientation and gender identity. These range from identity documents, medical records, audio -and video material and more. As a translator volunteer, you do not only translate original texts to Dutch, but you are also able to outline the surrounding context. In collaboration with other volunteers you approach affiliated asylum lawyers for source material and supervise the case file of clients.
What do we ask of you?
- You have a linguistic background in either Arabic, Farsi or Russian
- You have experience or affinity with LGBTI-refugees
- You are open-minded to people of different cultural backgrounds
- You are able to relate to LGBTI-refugees
- You are resilient and able to cope with work-related stress
- You rely on critical thinking
- You are able to work independently, but also as part of a team
- You are fluent in Dutch and proficient in English
- You are in possession of a properly functioning computer and are familiar with digital working environments
- You are available on an 8-16 hour per week basis
