Ter Apel – On the afternoon of Sunday, 22 May, a Turkish trans woman was the victim of sexual assault by two fellow residents of the asylum seekers’ centre where she was staying. Eén van de mannen betastte haar onzedelijk en probeerde haar borsten aan te raken. Terwijl de trans vrouw de mannen probeerde weg te duwen, werd haar arm omgedraaid. Dit gebeurde aan Ter Apelervenen, de weg waaraan ook de ingang van azc Ter Apel ligt. De asielzoekster heeft de poging tot aanranding aan het COA en politie gemeld waarbij onduidelijk is wat ondernomen is gezien de plegers er nog immer verblijven in azc Ter Apel. Eén van deze mannen had haar eerder in haar azc lastig gevallen. Amper 4 dagen daarvoor werd de trans vrouw aan dezelfde weg bekogeld met een pak fruitsap die uit een auto naar haar gegooid werd waarbij ze – onverstaanbaar voor haar – in het Nederlands uitgescholden werd. En ondanks dat borden langs deze weg melden dat er camerabewaking zou zijn, blijken deze camera’s er volgens de politie niet te zijn.
“It is really un-Dutch what she as a trans asylum seeker has to go through in the reception but also in the direct surroundings of azc Ter Apel,” says Sandro Kortekaas who, as chairman of LGBT Asylum Support, currently forwards several reports to COA on a daily basis about incidents towards LGBT asylum seekers in the Netherlands. “The situation is worse than in 2015 when the influx was very high. Despite the fact that we hear that COA is doing everything they can because of huge capacity problems, it is still the incidents towards LGBT asylum seekers that are increasing with by far the most incidents being reported from Ter Apel.” Barely a week ago, the foundation wrote a fire letter about such distressing situations in Ter Apel to State Secretary Eric van der Burg, the Lower House and the COA Board. Kortekaas: “Although we know that the Board of COA has read the letter, the situations outlined are apparently not yet serious enough for the State Secretary to bring about structural changes. This is more than serious because they only want to be protected by our Dutch constitution”.
Together with LGBT Asylum Support, the trans woman, who feels unsafe all the time in azc ter Apel, has written a fire letter to the Human Rights Board. “I am a trans woman. Ik kan mijn kamer waar ik verblijf niet uit, en als ik dat wel doe, word ik blootgesteld aan beledigingen en verbaal geweld. Ik leef tussen de mensen voor wie ik vlucht. Ik breng elke dag door met angst en bezorgdheid. Deze plaats is niet anders dan mijn land. Ik ben wanhopig en heb hulp nodig. This is the Netherlands, but I don’t feel like I’m in the Netherlands.” This fire letter will also be sent again to the State Secretary.
